B.C. summer club swimming returned for the Comox Valley Blue Devils after a two-year COVID shutdown, culminating in the Vancouver Island regional championships Aug. 5-7 at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. Thirteen of 18 Blue Devil swimmers won medals.

Perfect conditions greeted 120 golfers at the 2022 Men’s Tillicum on the weekend at Sunnydale Golf Club in Courtenay. Players from all over Vancouver Island welcomed the two-day blend of team and individual competition.

The Comox Valley Road Runners Backyard Ultra (CVRR BYU) was a roaring success. This is a unique event where participants run laps of the same course on the hour every hour until one runner is left standing. Each lap is called a yard, and each yard is approximately 6.71 km, such that 24 yards equals a total distance of 100 miles. The annual event ran July 23 at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds, with a mix of road and trails on the route.

Sunnydale Ladies held their 60th annual Tillicum tournament on Saturday, Aug. 6 — a two-ball, best ball format with 40 teams competing.

Comox Valley track and field athlete Payge Doty-Brown was awarded a leadership award at the BC Summer Games last month in Prince George.

Rapids Rugby players Paige Horsfall, Sadie Williams, Shayla Stigant, Brooke Horsfall, Sophia Julien and Monique Vinnedge represented the Comox Valley at the 2022 BC Summer Games last month in Prince George. The Island select team won the silver medal in the U16/17 rugby 7’s gold medal match against the Fraser Valley.

Ten members of the Comox Valley Cougars track club qualified to compete for Zone 6 at the B.C. Summer Games last month in Prince George. The the Vancouver Island-Central Coast was the largest zone for athletics at the Games. Each athlete could compete in a maximum of three individual events, or the pentathlon and one relay.

Thirteen dragon boaters, 11 from the Comox Valley and two from Campbell River, and other members of VI Paddling won 13 medals in 15 races at the Club Crew World Championships, July 18-24 in Sarasota, Fla.

A number of Comox Valley athletes contributed to the Vancouver Island-Central Coast’s top place in the medal standings among eight zones at the 2022 BC Summer Games. Prince George hosted the multi-sport event from July 21-24. The Games featured about 2,300 of B.C.’s top young athletes (average age 14) who competed in 18 sports.
