Kevin Hall will step down as president and vice-chancellor of the University of Victoria on Aug. 1, 2025, after accepting a new role as president and CEO of an international university.
Since joining in 2020, Hall has led the institution through the COVID-19 pandemic, addressed the impacts of international conflicts on campus, and managed changes in international student enrolment.
His tenure also included the renewal of the university’s strategic plan, the establishment of the vice-president Indigenous role, and an expansion of global engagement initiatives.
In a written statement, Hall said he remains confident in the university’s future and expressed appreciation for faculty, staff, students, alumni and community partners.
“I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together – from groundbreaking research and teaching, to creating a culture of inclusion and reconciliation,” he said.
The university’s board has appointed Qwul’sih’yah’maht, Robina Thomas, as acting president for a three-month term beginning Aug. 2. Thomas, a long-time UVic faculty member and senior administrator, currently serves as vice-president, Indigenous.
During her term as acting president, Thomas has appointed Lalita Kines to serve as interim vice-president, Indigenous.
The board of governors will begin the process of appointing a longer-term acting president and launching the search for UVic’s next permanent president and vice-chancellor.
The university will provide more updates as the process unfolds.
