Team B.C., with Vernon's Michelle Webster as an assistant coach, was the class of the field in women's softball at the Canada Summer Games in St. John's, NL.
The provincial squad capped an undefeated Games with their stiffest test of the tournament, a 9-6 win over Ontario, in the gold-medal match.
B.C. went 7-0 in St. John's, outscoring their opposition 61-7, and the pitching staff allowed just 25 hits in the seven games, eight of which came in the gold-medal contest.
After four straight shutouts in the preliminary round, New Brunswick became the first team to score a run on B.C. It came in an 11-1 defeat during playoff qualification.
B.C. advanced to the championship with a 7-0 blanking of Ontario. In the round-robin, the provincial squad blanked PEI 15-0, Saskatchewan 3-0, Alberta 9-zip, and Nova Scotia 7-0.
Webster, now retired as head coach of the UBC Okanagan Heat women's softball program, is part of Team B.C.'s all-women's staff.
In women's basketball Chloe Collins of Vernon and Team B.C. just missed the podium, finishing fourth.
B.C. fell 74-45 to Nova Scotia in the bronze-medal game. Collins had 12 points for B.C., all from beyond the three-point arc.
Collins had 10 points in B.C.'s 72-53 semifinal loss to Ontario, which lost the gold-medal game, 62-54, to Alberta. B.C.'s neighbours to the east downed Nova Scotia in the other semi.
B.C. went 1-2 in the preliminary round to finish third in its pool. Collins was held off the scoresheet in the team's opening game, a 69-51 loss to Alberta. She had three points in both of B.C.'s next two games, a 71-49 loss to Ontario, and a 71-54 victory over Quebec.
B.C. advanced to the semifinals with a 74-65 win over Saskatchewan.
Para-athlete Brea Duncan of Spallumcheen competed in five swimming events at the Canada Games pool. Her best result was a sixth-place shwoing in the 100 metre backstroke.
Duncan was 10th in the 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke. She was 11th in the 400m free, and 12th in the 100m free. Her mom, Jocelyn, was a competitor's assistant at the event.
Ian Johnstone of Vernon was a swim official at the Games, and he had a blast.
"What an amazing experience to represent B.C. as an official for the swimming at the ," said Johnstone on his Facebook page. "Met and became friends with swim officials from all across Canada. Saw some great swimming at a well-organized event in a newly renovated facility.
"The motor pool volunteers were excellent and got us to where we needed to go with great conversations. The hospitality of St.John’s people was fantastic."
B.C. sits third in the medal standings after Week 1 with 27 gold, 16 silver, and 24 bronze. Quebec leads with 35G, 33S, and 35B, followed by Ontario (37G-34S-31B).
Three Vernon athletes will be in action during the second week of the Canada Games.
Kacey Miller and Nolan Wilson of Vernon are with Team B.C.'s men's softball team. They begin eight games in four days on Tuesday, Aug. 19, against Nova Scotia.
Aili Marshall is a member of Team B.C. women's soccer team, which begins play Wednesday, Aug. 20, against the Northwest Territories.
