Sister Acts, an evening of live music, theatre, dance, story-telling and poetry, is an International Women’s Day celebration in support of the Comox Valley Transition Society.
The evening event on March 8 will include opportunities for creative collaborations and audience participation through visual art, singing, drumming and movement.
International Women’s Day, March 8, is a global day which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women worldwide; it is also a day to mark the call to action for continuing the work being done in advancing gender parity and gender balance in all areas of life, from the boardroom to the living room. This day is all about unity, celebration, advocacy and action and has been occurring for over a century with the first IWD event having taken place in 1911 with over a million people gathering in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.
Co-created by Letz Sing (Tina Filippino), Rhythm Spirit (Monica Hofer), the Abbey Studio (Cathy Stoyko) and Corre Alice (local artist), and working in partnership with the Comox Valley Transition Society, Sister Acts aims to provide an evening of amazing entertainment for the whole family while encouraging the public to recognize that while significant strides have been made in the area of women’s rights, enormous amounts of work still need to be done. With this in mind, all proceeds from this event will be donated to the Comox Valley Transition Society whose mission is to promote the creation of a healthy community through positive contributions to the lives of women, children and families.
Sister Acts, International Women’s Day Celebration takes place at St. John the Divine Church Hall, 579 Fifth St. in Courtenay. Doors open at 7 p.m., admission is by donation, and entertainment will run from 7:30 to approximately 10 p.m. This is an all ages, everyone welcome community event. There will be a gift basket raffle (proceeds to the CVTS as well), snacks and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase.
Please join us in celebrating International Women’s Day and support this very worthwhile cause at the same time.
