Since the beginning of summer, police have seen an increase in thefts from vehicles, particularly within the Town of Comox and City of Courtenay.
The Comox Valley RCMP is urging residents to protect their belongings by removing them from parked vehicles and ensuring all the doors and windows are locked.
These thefts are largely preventable, simply by removing valuables and locking up. Every stolen item has a ripple effect that impacts not just the immediate victims but also law enforcement resources, and fraud investigators as they dedicate hours of investigative time to solving these crimes.
However, when these thefts do happen, it’s important to report them. Every report helps the Comox Valley RCMP see the bigger picture. It can reveal trends, direct patrols, and sometimes even link one suspect to multiple crimes. An initial report can also assist with locating and returning stolen property.
“In a small community like Comox, residents are often the first to notice when something isn’t right. Reporting any and all suspicious activity, no matter how small it seems, can prevent crimes before they happen.” said Cst. Monika Terragni, Comox Valley RCMP.
Since the first day of summer, the following items have been stolen from unlocked vehicles; wallets (including credit cards, bank cards, health cards, cash and personal identification), tools, speakers, engagement ring and wedding band, sun glasses, cell phone cables, insurance papers, firearms possession/acquisition licence, go pro camera, military identification, medication, Garmin GPS and walkie-talkies.
Theft Prevention Tips:
• Always lock all of your vehicle's doors and windows after entering and exiting.
• Never leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running, even for a few seconds. Turn off the ignition and take the keys with you.
• Never hide a spare key in your car or outside your residence.
• Never leave personal identification or valuables in your vehicle.
• Remove technological and other removable accessories from view when not in your vehicle.
• Invest in anti-theft devices.
