To celebrate Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 6-12, Domino鈥檚 Pizza and the Courtenay Fire Department are again partnering to reward Courtenay residents who have working smoke alarms in their homes with free pizza.

Telethon time is upon us again. On Sunday, Nov. 3, the Comox Valley Child Development Association (CVCDA) will host its 44th Annual Children鈥檚 Telethon at the Sid Williams Theatre from noon to 8 p.m. This year, raffle winners drawn at the event will take home one of two fantastic prizes in the annual CVCDA Raffle fundraiser. All proceeds support local children and their families.

The Miki鈥檚iw M茅tis Association is holding its annual general meeting on Oct. 5 at the Comox Legion at 1825 Comox Ave. in Comox. Doors open at 10 a.m., with the meeting starting at 10:30. A potluck lunch will be offered, with a board of directors election to follow lunch. Positions up for election include: vice-president, secretary, women鈥檚 rep, youth rep and director at large.

The Cascadia Poetics LAB Society (CPLS) presents its second biennial Cascadia Poetry Festival - Poetry in a Time of Climate Crisis - taking place in various locations in downtown Cumberland, Oct. 4-5.

The next event in the Cumberland Forest鈥檚 Science Pub Series, Nature鈥檚 Phoenix: Forest Fire Ecology and the Poetics of Climate Crisis , is coming up on Friday, Oct. 4 at the Cumberland Masonic Hall.

Indigenous support worker, Danielle Chartrand, and student, Hailey Hessler, show the 200 oranges donated to Highland Secondary School by the Comox Valley Quality Foods locations to help promote and celebrate the school鈥檚 Orange Shirt Day. Sept. 30 marked the seventh annual Orange Shirt Day, a special day to reflect upon the residential school experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation.

The inaugural 鈥淪ervice of the Heart鈥� event offers free, private, one-on-one DASA (Developing Awareness through Self-Actualization) meditation instruction for breast cancer patients and their primary caregivers on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 in Courtenay.
