Duncan Whetter is a commanding presence on the football field.

In only his second year in the sport, Sebastian Lambert of Denman Island was selected to play with the B.C. U14 team that competed in December at the Snoop Youth Football League National Championship in Los Angeles. Rapper Snoop Dogg founded the non-profit league for inner-city children to play football.

Six cadets from 386 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Comox competed in the Regional Cadet Biathlon Competition at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre last weekend in Vernon. A total of 84 cadets tested their fitness, skiing, teamwork and marksmanship skills over the 4.5 and 6 km courses.

The senior girls basketball team at Highland Secondary finished third at the double-A Island championships on the weekend in Shawnigan Lake, just missing a provincial berth.

The Mark Isfeld senior girls basketball team qualified for the triple-A provincial tournament by finishing second at the Island championships last weekend at Wellington Secondary in Nanaimo.

The Vanier Towhees senior boys basketball team beat the host school 63-57 Thursday at the 4A North Island playoffs at Dover Bay Secondary in Nanaimo.

For the first time in many years, the Mark Isfeld senior boys basketball team entered the North Island playoff tournament as underdogs in each of the three games they played. The triple-A tourney was last weekend in Port Alberni.

The Strathcona Nordic Ski Club hosted the final two races in the 2019-20 Teck Coast Cup race series, Feb. 15 and 16 at Mount Washington.

The Comox Valley Road Runners were busy last weekend. One contingent of locals raced the Vancouver First Half half-marathon. Another group took on the challenge of the Cedar 12k — the third Island Series race of the season.
