The Vancouver Island University Mariners have an upcoming prospects game and ID Camp in Nanaimo for the women’s and men’s soccer programs.

Abby McDowell, a Grade 10 student at Vanier Secondary in Courtenay, made the finals in two events at the B.C. high school swim provincials on the weekend in Richmond.

The Courtenay 45s men’s soccer team defeated Nanaimo City 2-1, Saturday at the Vanier turf field. The two teams compete in the North Island Masters League.

Last weekend, the U15 Upper Island Riptide girls soccer team found itself short seven players. With a home game against a strong opponent, Victoria South, there were only two options: forfeit, or call up youth players — a decision that at first was questionable, and potentially risky.
