Canada secures spot in knockout round of the Concacaf Championship

Three basketball teams from Isfeld won North Island championships last weekend.

The Vanier senior boys basketball team competes this weekend in the three-team North Island 4A zone qualifier for the Island tourney the following weekend.

The Comox Valley Kickers women鈥檚 team hosted Langley RFC Saturday at Cumberland Village Park and won by a convincing 47-5. Emma Jacobi and Tyra Schaad each scored two tries, and Natalie Nguyen, Jess Nikkel, Frances Nye and Sienna Stigant each scored one. Christina Green-Speck added two converts, and Nikkel and Stigant each had one convert.

The Isfeld Ice 3A senior girls basketball team won the North Island championship Feb. 9-11 in Port Alberni. Isfeld was undefeated in North Island league play and their playoff opponents struggled to keep up with the high scoring and defensively tough Ice, who won 52-38 over the Wellington Wildcats of Nanaimo in the final.

The Highland Raiders senior girls basketball team won their home tournament last weekend, beating Nanaimo Christian School, ranked fourth in B.C. for single A, 40-36 in a thrilling overtime game.

The B.C. contingent will include several Comox Valley athletes at the 2023 Canada Winter Games, Feb. 18 to March 5 at venues in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Payge Doty-Brown of the Comox Valley received the BC Athletics U16 girls Athlete of the Year award at a recent awards banquet in Richmond.

A small but mighty team of Strathcona Nordic Ski Club athletes demonstrated their grit and tenacity at the recent Western Canadian Cross Country Ski Championships held over three days in Kimberley, B.C. More than 450 athletes from ski clubs throughout western Canada attended the Kimberley Nordic Ski Club event, as well as a handful of skiers from Ontario and Quebec.
