Dear editor,
This September the new French school will open in Comox.
Families attending the school are now being asked to vote on a new name. I think it is important that people think seriously about the current name and if it is serving the school and community well.
I have always found école au Coeur de l’île very difficult and long-winded to pronounce and even longer to write properly.
I am weary of being at community functions or discussing issues involving the school and having people screw up their face in bewilderment when I mention the name so I have just used “ the French School” in place of the name.
I have been witness to numerous track meets when the announcers stumble over the name of our school as well as many community events where speakers struggle with the name.
One of the proposed names is école Beaufort, which will be my personal choice. It goes well with the school crest, is relevant to the geography of the area (the Beaufort Mountain Range) and is easily pronounced in both French and English.
I feel it is a name I would proudly use to describe our beautiful new school.
