Spring art at NIC

The days are getting longer and the world seems to be coming alive with new growth.

The days are getting longer and the world seems to be coming alive with new growth.

At North Island College, the fine arts students have unleashed their creativity and are ready to show you the fruits of their labour.

Join them this Saturday for the Spring Art Event from 7 to 11 p.m. in the Shadbolt and Raven studios at NIC’s Comox Valley campus.

Twice a year for over 20 years, the students of the NIC Fine Arts department and Emily Carr University of Art + Design, with the support of the community, put on a gallery show known as the Art Event.

This year, graphic design students will also participate and will have a display of interactive digital media as well as graphic design. This event displays an eclectic collection of work created by students including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photography, prints and more.

This is an invaluable opportunity for students to share their work with each other and the community. This is also a great place to purchase a piece of original artwork, as many of the students are selling works to fund tuition.

Musical entertainment this year is provided by Vancouver-based band Giraffe Aftermath. They have built on the traditions of reggae and dub music, using hip-hop rhythms and a psychedelic approach to create a unique blend of lively, danceable music. To get a preview of their music, go to .

Serious Coffee is providing refreshments, and Thrifty Foods and Natural Pastures are providing the appetizers. There will also be a cash bar and all sales go towards fine arts programming.

There will be a wide variety of items available through a silent auction.

The Spring Art Event is open to all ages and admission is free; however, donations are greatly appreciated and are used to alleviate student expenses.  For more information, visit .
